The Thanksgiving leftovers may be gone, but the spirit of the season has only begun. Thankfulness is a wonderful characteristic to cultivate and develop, and it’s something many of focus on during the holiday season. If you’re looking to pay it forward this holiday season, consider participating in #GivingTuesday.
What is #GivingTuesday?
#GivingTuesday is celebrated the Tuesday following Thanksgiving — you know, the one right after Cyber Monday. There are plenty of ways to get involved, whether it’s in your community or at a larger scale...
Envisioned as a way to kick off the charitable giving season, #GivingTuesday was started in 2012 by Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact in New York City. Its universal message of giving and volunteerism has gone global, spreading well beyond the U.S.
Whether you are considering donating to your favorite charity, starting a fundraising drive for your nonprofit organization, or engaging your company or coworkers to give back to your community, #GivingTuesday, with it’s database of nonprofits and its hashtag and social campaign, provides a way to share and spread the word about giving back to our communities, encouraging others to join us as we volunteer or give.
How to Get Involved
If you’re ready to roll up your sleeves at your local soup kitchen, contact them directly and arrange for a time to go in and help. If you’re not sure of where you can help, the #GivingTuesday website provides a search of participating groups. Simply input your location to find opportunities near you. There are over 27,000 organizations in their database looking for volunteers and donations. (By the way, if you’re a nonprofit looking for volunteers, you can sign up to join the movement on their website!)
If you prefer to raise money, you can start your own fundraiser on Facebook, who has also gotten into the #GivingTuesday spirit. You can grab a frame from the #GivingTuesday Facebook page and fundraise for your favorite charity. This year, Facebook will match up to $7 million in donations made on Facebook to U.S. nonprofits.
There’s plenty of reason to give back, these extra incentives just make it easier!
The #GivingTuesday movement encourages kids and families to give together with #GivingTuesdayKids, a “youth-led social change activation” inspiring kids all over the world to lead volunteer projects and engage in random acts of kindness.
Modern Kids Design believes in giving back. A portion of our sales goes to environmentally focused nonprofits that are working hard to preserve our planet and to provide educational opportunities.
Have you considered donating this #GivingTuesday? There are so many wonderful organizations that you are certain to find some that align with your values and vision, and it’s great fun learning about them too. Happy Holidays!
